Vreneli premium

Any one knows anything about this?

"(iii)investment in coins from the gold standard era, particularly the Napoleon, the Sovereign, the Double Eagle and the Vreneli (Swiss), became popular initially during the 1930s after the collapse of the gold standard itself and they often traded at a premium in the years after World War II. An added incentive was created by the rising gold price of the 1970s offering profit from both price and premium (the Vreneli premium was sixty per cent in 1979 and fluctuated between two and thirty per cent in the 1980s). The attraction has been less in recent years, with a weak gold price, and premiums have sometimes been non-existent;"

This isn't the only mention I've see on the web of this bullion coin with numismatic premium on the Swiss Frank, but there's sure not a lot of info. I talked to a gold dealer here not too long ago and they do have Vrenelis, and they do charge a bit more than the normal premium over spot for them (more like 10% than 5 to 6% for Krugers), but they say that's because they're small denomination coins (about 1/10th troy ounce/20 Frank Vreneli, if memory serves).

Re: Vreneli premium

If you're buying quantity, Tulving (tulving.com) usually has them for about 2% over spot. These, Sovereigns, French Francs are all so plentiful as to not really warrant any extreme premiums.

Premium in Switzeland: 2% for the 20Fr. Vreneli and 18% for the 10Frs. Vreneli

The only rare years are 1926 for the 20Frs and 1911 for the 10Frs

Re: Vreneli premium

Guys, thanks for the info. It was this suggestion that the Vrenelis traded at a premium during the last bull that made me curious - 60% over spot is pretty high - and just why that happened to the Vreneli rather than the Kruger/Maple/whatever else.
